Apartment Fire  - 95 Valley River Avenue

Murphy Fire assisted by Ranger and Peachtree Fire Departments responded to an apartment fire at 95 Valley River Avenue Friday afternoon at 4:10 pm.

Upon arrival of first units at 4:16 found an approximately 9,000 square foot multi-story apartment complex with dark turbulent smoke showing from the attic.

Initial reports upon arrival indicated that all occupants were out of the structure.  During size-up by the incident commander, occupants were continuing to exit the building.  Upon completing an initial search for occupants, suppression efforts were initiated.  Personnel entered the building and progressed to the attic encountering high heat and zero visibility.  Fire attack was initiated controlling the main body of the fire.  Upon control of the fire, salvage and overhaul operations were initiated.  Fire was extinguished at 4:58 pm.

No injuries were reported.  One patient was evaluated by Cherokee County EMS, but was not transported.

Many agencies assisted in addition to Ranger and Peachtree Fire, these include: Cherokee County EMS, Cherokee County Rescue Squad, Murphy Police, Murphy Power, Murphy Public Works, Cherokee County Schools, Red Cross and the Hulbert-Johnson Homeless Shelter.

22 people were identified to occupy this complex of which 11 were provided temporary shelter by Red Cross and Hulbert-Johnson Homeless Shelter.

This incident had high potential for injuries or loss of life in addition to involved property loss and exposure damage.  We were fortunate this incident was successful mitigated which I attribute to firefighters and other agency personnel who assisted.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Melissa Shepard owner of Johnson Spa Salon converts Tim Radford of WKRK into a true patriot.
PictureThe early stages of Tim's Torture.
It's official.  I lost the bet.

Tim Radford of WKRK and Michael Shepard of No Contract Cellular created an insane bet at the beginning of December as No Contract Cellular launched Defense Mobile in their store.  Defense Mobile is a mobile service that benefits those who have served in the military as well as their families.

I can barely remember the original terms of this crazy bet as Michael carefully crafted those terms into his favor.  However, it was decided that the loser of the bet would have his hair dyed red, white and blue.  That's pretty patriotic, right?

Michael's wife, Melissa, owns Johnson Spa Salon near the corner of Hwy 64 W and Old Ranger Road in Murphy.  It was agreed that she would get to have fun and do the honors of hair dying.    She did a fantastic job.  (If you want to get your hair dyed red, white and blue, I strongly recommend you call her at (828) 837-0700.)

So from 3:30 until 6:00 pm today, I sat in the chair while Melissa worked her magic.  Michael sat in a nearby chair laughing and taking pictures.  At one point he was laughing so hard, I thought we were going to have to ask him to leave.

Michael had joined us on PartyLine earlier today.  Even though I had lost the bet, a huge number of listeners called in and said that Michael should get his hair dyed as well.  I encourage you to stop into No Contract Cellular and try to talk him into it.  I'd love to post those pictures!

We had a lot of fun with the contest.  Our purpose was to help show appreciation to those men and women who have served our country.  No Contract Cellular donates a percentage of their sales to our local Warrior Clan.  The Warrior Clan are veterans working alongside returning warriors to eradicate suicide, domestic violence, substance abuse and homelessness and to help prepare our men and women to re-enter school or the workforce. Warrior Clan is a vital resource in helping veterans transition from the Armed Forces to civilian life.

Below are some more pictures of the emotional scarring that has taken place in my life.  We hope you enjoy.    Don't forget to stop into No Contract Cellular and let Michael know he's next!  No Contract Cellular is located inside Circuit World on Andrews Road in Murphy.

First Travel-Related Zika Case Confirmed In Georgia

ATLANTA – The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is confirming the first travel-related case of Zika virus in Georgia. Testing was done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The non-pregnant individual traveled to Colombia between the end of December and the first of January and has made a full recovery. Tests are still being done on specimens from several other Georgia residents with travel history to areas where Zika virus outbreaks are ongoing.

“It is extremely important that individuals who have traveled to countries where there are on-going Zika virus outbreaks keep guard against additional mosquito bites,” said Cherie Drenzek, D.V.M, state epidemiologist for DPH. “During the first week or so of infection, Zika virus can be passed from an infected person to another mosquito through mosquito bites. An infected mosquito can then transmit the virus to other people.”

DPH cautions travelers, especially women who are pregnant, headed to countries where Zika virus transmission is ongoing: Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Martinique, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, Venezuela, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, among others. The complete list of Zika affected countries can be found at http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/page/zika-travel-information.

There are urgent concerns about Zika virus infection and pregnant women. Zika virus infections have been confirmed in infants with microcephaly and in the current outbreak in Brazil, a marked increase in the number of infants born with microcephaly has been reported. Pregnant women or women trying to get pregnant should not travel to areas where Zika virus transmission is ongoing. Pregnant women who have traveled to these areas should consult their physician immediately. Health care providers should ask all pregnant women about recent travel.

Zika virus is primarily spread to people through mosquito bites. The most common symptoms of Zika virus disease are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes). The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting from several days to a week. Severe disease requiring hospitalization is uncommon. Most people infected with Zika virus never know they are sick.

Currently, there is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat Zika. Travelers should check CDC travel advisoriesfor their destinations and take precautions to protect themselves from mosquitos:
·  Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants
· Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), or IR3535 (use as directed)
·  Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents)
·  Stay and sleep in screened-in or air-conditioned rooms

The number of Zika cases among travelers visiting or returning to the United States will likely increase. These imported cases could result in local spread of the virus in some areas of the country, including Georgia.

For more information about Zika virus and current travel advisories, visit dph.georgia.gov or cdc.gov/zika.

On Thursday, February 11, 2016 U.S. District Judge Martin Reidinger sentenced Mark Alan Tygart, of Robbinsville, N.C. to 76 months in prison on possession of child pornography charges, announced Jill Westmoreland Rose, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of North Carolina.

U.S. Attorney Rose is joined in making the announcement by John A. Strong, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Charlotte Division, Alan K. Flora Special Agent in Charge of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Computer Crimes Unit, and Sheriff Danny Milsaps of the Graham County Sheriff’s Office.

In October 2015, Tygart pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography. According to court documents and statements made in court, in November 2014, an undercover officer discovered Tygart posting links to child pornography in an online chat room where Tygart went by the name “twerk.” In December 2014, a search warrant was executed at Tygart’s residence in a joint operation with the FBI, SBI, and Graham County Sheriff’s Office detectives. Computer forensic analysis of seized devices revealed hundreds of images and videos of child pornography.

The defendant will be transferred to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility. All federal sentences are served without the possibility of parole.

The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
